Sometimes your guests become your teachers.

One guest arrived for one of our Reset Retreats.

Over several days we talked about life, business, travel and purpose.

Then she said something so simple that I immediately wrote it down."Let us be who we're going to attract."

I haven't forgotten those words.

This wasn't only true for people.

Also true for boutique hotels too.

Many hospitality businesses spend enormous amounts of energy trying to appeal to everyone.

Families.

Business travelers.

Party groups.

Luxury travelers.

Budget travelers.

Wellness guests.

Digital nomads.

The problem is that the more you try to become everything, the less distinctive you become.

At Casa JOMO, we gradually realized we weren't attracting guests who wanted constant activity.

We were attracting people who wanted balance.

People who appreciated art.

Gardens.

Culture.

Quiet mornings.

Meaningful conversations.

Some didn't know they needed rest until they arrived.

Others booked specifically because they wanted exactly that.

Both belonged.

That changed the way I thought about branding.

Branding isn't about convincing everyone to stay with you.

It's about helping the right people recognize themselves in your story.

When your website honestly reflects your business...When your photography tells the truth...When your values are visible...Something wonderful happens.

The right guests begin finding you.

The wrong guests quietly move on.

That's not failure.

That's alignment.

As Sarah Riley said during our conversation, if you're everything to everyone, you'll eventually become nothing to no one.

Strong brands have the courage to disappoint the wrong audience.

Ironically, that's exactly what makes the right audience love them.

Today, whenever I'm making a decision about Casa JOMO—or any new hospitality venture—I still come back to that one sentence.

"Let us be who we're going to attract."

It isn't just good branding advice.

It's a philosophy for building a business that feels authentic every single day.
